I've seen more films in the year 2000 than in many years past, but of course there were some I missed that would have made this list or the bottom 10. I can only talk about what I've seen, and so here they are, the top 10 films of 2000 as told by yours truly.
10. Lucky Numbers -- John Travolta and Lisa Kudrow star in an ensemble cast of some truly fun actors. However this one never hit the mark with me. Sure this one could've just missed the bottom 10, however something had to make the list, and the lack of genuine laughs in this movie left me feeling empty.
9. Dude Where's My Car -- I really think that I lost brain cells when I saw this movie. Then again that may have been the point. This will definitely find an audience out there, it just doesn't include me. There are flashes that Ashton Kutcher (who plays Jesse in this one) could be a decent comic actor in the years to come though..
8. The Beach -- Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this film that never quite made sense. Visually this is quite a stunning film, but the plot and the rest was so all over the map that it couldn't make up for the shortcomings.
7. Get Carter -- Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, Miranda Richardson, Rachael Leigh Cook and Mickey Rourke couldn't all be in a bad film together, could they. They could and they were. Get Carter is aimless and I was really hopeful that it would come through and be a very deserving film, but no such luck.
6. The In Crowd -- Another year, another time, and this film could have won for worst film of the year. I sat through the whole film, after wading through a very attractive press kit and seeing trailers that really intrigued me. Instead, the focus of the film is a new, hot, young cast...with very little to do.
5. Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas -- Why would you make a sequel to a film that already wasn't that good. And then when you do you eliminate all the bigger name talent and replace with lesser name talent. YIKES! Stephen Baldwin was somewhat amusing as Barney...but that was about it.
4. The Next Best Thing -- Madonna was awesome in Evita. This movie on the other hand was nothing but terrible, miserable, and all the rest. Rupert Everett was the lone shining star in this film, and that didn't matter much. Most years would see this movie smack dab as the worst of the year...but...
3. Ready to Rumble -- I like wrestling...I know, I know...hold the e-mail's. HOWEVER!!! This film was awful. This movie started bad, and then just got worse. I was disappointed that it couldn't have at least had some fun in it.
2. 3 Strikes -- There is more language in this film in the first 5 minutes of the movie then you see during most entire films. It all just never makes a whole lot of sense, and it has a good premise for a movie (the 3 strikes laws).
1. Battlefield Earth -- Bad, bad, bad. I just couldn't believe that this film could be as bad as it turned out to be. A great cast with John Travolta, Barry Pepper and Forest Whitaker and the film turns out to be a bunch of strange looking guys in a number of illogical situations. People learn how to fly in mere hours and the whole thing just was miserable. If you want to see the worst movie in years...this is it. It might be fun as a late night camp comedy though.
There was a number of other movies that had a shot at this list...and some may not have even deserved quite as bad a fate as they received. But in looking at the 100+ movies that I saw this year, I had to pick 10 and these were the lucky or unlucky ones. Now on to 2001 and keep an eye out, because some of the worst movies are released in the first 5 months of the year. Watch for some of them in next year's list.
