Saving the Best for Last

Paul Hall

We’ve reached the end of a rather uneventful year at the box office, so will the real Oscar candidates please stand up?  Maybe some of these films that are hitting theaters in December will be the next big things.  There is definitely a little something for everyone when I look at the lineup, so let’s get to it.

December 5

The Last Samurai – The Tom Cruise led epic from the director of Glory that will attempt to take us back to the late 1800’s and the battle between the Samurai and the Japanese Emperor.

Honey – Jessica Alba stars in this story of the girl who tries to rise above her situation and create her future in the world of hip-hop dance.

December 12

Something’s Gotta Give – Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton star in a romantic comedy about a man whose relationships are just a bit out of whack.

Stuck On You – The Farrelly Brothers tell us the story of conjoined twins (Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear) as only the Farrelly’s can.

December 17

The Lord of the Rings:  The Return of the King – If I have to tell you about this one, you are living in a cave.  This is, of course, the third installment in the highly successful trilogy from director Peter Jackson.

December 19

Mona Lisa Smile – Julia Roberts stars in the story of a teacher at Wellesley with students that have their own agenda.

December 25

Cold Mountain – Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, and Renee Zellwegger star in this period drama about life and love in the South during the Civil War from director Anthony Minghella.

Cheaper By The Dozen – Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt are parents of twelve kids who all want their attention though their careers are also exploding around them.  Also featuring Piper Perabo, Ashton Kutcher, and Hilary Duff.

Paycheck – A man (Ben Affleck) does work for many big companies only to have his memory erased to prevent from divulging secrets.  But his latest job forces him to search out his past and get to his future.

Peter Pan – A live-action version of the classic story.

Also this December in limited release in certain markets watch for Big Fish (From Tim Burton’s imagination comes this look at Edward Bloom played by Albert Finney and those in his life.), In America (Director Jim Sheridan’s tale of an Irish family moving to New York), Calendar Girls (Based on a true story of a group of women who decide to do a skimpy calendar for charity and become celebrities in their own right.), The Cooler (William H. Macy is a man whose luck isn’t good, and the casino uses him for that fact.), Love Don’t Cost A Thing (A remake of the 80s comedy Can’t Buy Me Love starring Nick Cannon),  plus many more interesting films.

Film I’m Most Looking Forward To During The MonthLord Of The Rings:  Return Of The King.

Film Likely To Have The Biggest Box Office OpeningLord Of The Rings:  Return Of The King.

Sleeper Of The MonthSomething’s Gotta Give (Jack is always dynamite!)

December looks to be a month with a little something for everyone.  Christmas is always one of my favorite times of the year, and with the movies out this Christmas looks to be big at the box office as well.
