Let me take a minute to preface this by saying that I have not nearly seen all of the films that could make this list, and I do reserve the right to update it after I see some of the films that are part of those that qualify for the 1998 list. I will definitely keep you posted of any updates that may occur. The other disclaimer I have to put on this is that these are the 10 films that I just didn't enjoy this year. That could be for a variety of reasons and just because I didn't like them doesn't mean you shouldn't check them out....ok....maybe it does, but even then they may become cult classics depending on what everyone else thinks. Remember we all have our own tastes, and hey I could be totally wrong on these judgments, in your eyes. These are not meant to be inflammatory towards anyone in particular, I just didn't like these things for one reason or another. Now on to the list.
10. BASEketball -- During two or three times in this film I was on the ground rolling with laughter. Those two or three times were it, however, and I was just waiting time after time, scene after scene to laugh more than ever. The scene when they try to revive the kid is one of the funniest however.
9. Dead Man On Campus -- I'm a big comedy fan and I expected some fun from both BASEketball and this film. This one was also dead on it's arrival into theaters. The funniest character in this movie is Cliff....and he is only given about 10 minutes of screen time. It could've been so much better.
8. Snake Eyes -- Nicholas
Cage, Gary Sinise, Brian DePalma......what a combination!!! Unfortunately
that's all it was....a combination. This film never really got going
for me. Nicholas Cage's character was just too crazy and far out.
There is a very cool opening scene that was done in one cut, however, that
is neat if you know it's there.
7. Lost In Space -- Millions spent, and I just didn't get it. The only uniquely good aspect of this film was the over sexual tension between Matt LeBlanc and Heather Graham. Other than that this was just a waist of time..
6. Vampires -- Wowzers....in a better year this may have been the worst film of the year. Camp, corny, overly vulgar, blood laced, and just no purpose whatsoever. James Woods is mildly amusing as usual, but over all not too good.
5. The Avengers -- Another in the line of films this year that had a great group of people working on it and yet it just didn't measure up. If I were to have told you at the beginning of the year that a film starring Sean Connery, Uma Thurman, and Ray Fiennes would be one of the worst films of the year....you'd never believe me. It was a major disappointment.
4. Almost Heroes -- I am a big fan of Chris Farley's and being that this was his last film I was really looking forward to his swan song. Disappointing, very disappointing. Farley was so overweight and very little onscreen chemistry with Matthew Perry. The story had potential, but like so many great comedy flops, it just was never realized.
3. Spice World -- Yikes!!!! This film was truly dreadful. All of the Spice Girls faithful flocked to the box office out of the opening weekend, but that was it. A flimsy plot that was poorly acted and just didn't make much sense.
2. Knock Off -- Van Damme at his worst. I was a fan of most of his early films. Though they were thin on plot there was always enough there to keep you interested, Knock Off on the other hand was miserable. The comic sidekick in the film was Rob Schneider, and he didn't get much of a chance to make a difference at all. This truly is one of the worst films I've seen in years.
1. Soldier -- Poor, miserable, awful, monstrously overdone, boring, monotonous, I just can't find enough adjectives to describe it. I just didn't get it!!! This is a film that some people may get, but I just can't figure out why Kurt Russell would do such a role. They attempt at making it Terminator-ish and instead made something totally removed from that. If I will tell you one movie from the past year not to see. This would be it.
I truly had a time narrowing down this list to 10. Most of the films that made the list I truly have things I like about them, most of the time the actors made for a very promising film. What missed the cut you ask??? A Night At the Roxbury, Godzilla, and What Dreams May Come were close.....but fortunately for them there were other films to enter this dubious list. Even though I think they weren't some of the better offerings of the year....see some of them, you may find them amusing. Take Care....and Save Me A Seat.
