Let me take a minute to preface this by saying that I have not nearly seen all of the films that could make this list, and I do reserve the right to update it after I see some of the films that are part of those that qualify for the 1999 list. I will definitely keep you posted of any updates that may occur. The other disclaimer I have to put on this is that these are the 10 films that I just didn't enjoy this year. That could be for a variety of reasons and just because I didn't like them doesn't mean you shouldn't check them out....ok....maybe it does, but even then they may become cult classics depending on what everyone else thinks. Remember we all have our own tastes, and hey I could be totally wrong on these judgments, in your eyes. These are not meant to be inflammatory towards anyone in particular, I just didn't like these things for one reason or another. Now on to the list.
10. The Love Letter – Ok, so it could be argued that this film should not be on my list, and in fact it was one of the last film to be included. It was just a film that supposedly focused on Tom Selleck, but didn’t. All of the other roles in the film were average at best, and it just felt like I wasted some time sitting through this screening..
9. Fight Club -- Brad Pitt and Edward Norton it has got to be good, right? Nope. Ed Norton is truly an awesome actor and he is one of the few bright spots in this film. A couple of plot twists in this film keeps it from being even lower rated on this list. The violence is all too real in this film as well, and made me squirm in my seat (which I know was it's desired effect) but the movie as a whole just didn't do it for me.
8. South Park Bigger, Longer, and Uncut -- The first 20 minutes or so amused me, mildly. But after that, I was almost taken aback by the film. The musical numbers went from catchy, to overly long. Yes they do offend just about every group imaginable in this film. For me I just didn't get it.
7. Outside Providence -- From a novel by Peter Farrelly, but this was just long and boring. Alec Baldwin and crew just didn't do it for me on this one.
6. Eyes Wide Shut -- I just really felt that this film was a waste. I was looking forward to it for some time and it turned into a sex filled romp through some of the strangest situations you can imagine. I was really disappointed in this film, especially with Cruise, Kidman, and Kubrick working together for so long on this.
5. 8mm -- Ok, this was a truly dreadful film. Who's idea was it to send Nicolas Cage into the fun and informative world of underground porn. I just couldn't wait for it to end. Every time I hoped there would be more to the plot on this one it just got sicker and sicker and sicker. Call me a prude if you will, but this film just dealt with a subject matter so dark that it just wasn't enjoyable.
4. Ravenous -- When I stepped into the screening for this film we were handed beef jerky with the Ravenous poster art on it and the tag line "You are what you eat". Yipes!!! This was just a gross movie that couldn't make up it's mind if it wanted to be a dark comedy or a serious horror/suspense film. What a waste of time for me at this one.
3. Universal Soldier III -- So you look at the title and say, what do you expect? Well I actually enjoyed the first Universal Soldier film with Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren and this one brought Jean Claude back to the role. But it was like most of the recent Van Damme films, not good. I wanted to like this, I really did. But as you can see if it made it this high on my worst list...it must have been bad.
2. Simon Sez -- Yes, this got a nationwide theatrical release. My only question is why? Dennis Rodman stars in this one and lets just say...Dennis stick to the court, or find a better script. They try all the buddy gimmicks with Dennis but this one just doesn't work.
1. The King and I -- I've come up with a lot of different adjectives for bad in this piece. However, I can only think of one word to describe this film. BAD. I saw this at a packed screening full of kids that became restless within 5 minutes of the films opening. And they were getting squirmy with good reason. Man this film just bored me to tears and was definitely one of the worst animated films that I've seen recently, if not ever. If you're looking for something to keep the kids happy and interest you, be warned this will do neither. And I feel sorry about saying this two because this is such a magical story that when done properly can be fantastic.
1999 was a good year for films, and as such I had a little bit of a hard time getting to the final choices on this list. Hey remember these are just my opinions on these films, you may love them. I know there are a number of people who just loved Fight Club and Eyes Wide Shut, but they weren't for me. Enjoy the movies, but if you don't like these don't look at me, I told ya so.
