Detective John Hobbs (Denzel Washington) has caught himself a killer in Edgar Reese.  Now it's time for Hobbs to see Reese executed for the murders that he has committed.  Hobbs meets with Reese shortly before his execution at which time Reese utters some cryptic sounding words that Hobbs believes to be just more psycho-babble from Reese's deranged mind.  What Hobbs doesn't realize is that he has more on his mind than dying on this night.

After the execution, Hobbs goes back to work alongside of his partner Jonesy (John Goodman) only to find that they are tracking what they believe to be a copycat killer.  All of the crimes seem eerily similar to those committed by Edgar Reese before his execution.  Things at the crime scenes are similar right down to the smallest details of the crimes that were not well known by the general public.  Hobbs' boss Lt. Stanton (Donald Sutherland) wonders if it isn't someone within the department that is actually party to the crimes.  All fingers tend to point towards Hobbs as the copycat killer.....or could it be Azazel???

Fallen is spooky.  The spookiness of this film is even greater for those that are religious in nature and believe in evil spirits among us.  Part of me worried that this film would be too similar to the 1990 Wes Craven feature Shocker.  But where Shocker sometimes veered into the laughable, Fallen strayed into the fears that lurk within all of us.  It so eerily reminded us of those times when someone may be looking at us, following us, or stalking us.  The only thing is that in this film it isn't really a person following us.

As a suspenseful, thriller I liked Fallen.  It grabbed at my religious beliefs and scared me because of them.  For a less religious person this film may not be as frightening.  But with a good performance from Denzel Washington, Fallen is a movie that really scared me, which is what it was supposed to do.

Grade:  B

Parents Guide:  Fallen is rated R and it's rating is due to a variety of issues.  There is virtually no sex in the film but...  Fallen contains some extremely violent and gruesome killings.  Granted most of this takes place off camera but the results will affect many.  Also the language in the film can get extremely coarse from time to time.  The subject matter of Fallen will leave a lot of people with goose bumps on their arms and nightmares in their sleep.  While I did like Fallen for what it was, the subject matter did leave an uneasy feeling about what lurks behind the next corner.  Parents who are concerned about their children seeing evil spirits and murders need to keep them away from this film.  I wouldn't recommend a lot of younger kids viewing this film.
