Reporter Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) thinks she has found the story to make it to an anchor job.  DiscoverySeems a former cabinet member has abruptly resigned and the name "Ellie" has come up in discussions.  Is it an elaborate sex scandal, and if so with which member of the cabinet is "Ellie" linked?  The President?  Vice-President?  Defense Secretary?  Who?   Well Jenny is about to find out as she is whisked away to meet with President Tom Beck (Morgan Freeman).  He is amazed that she knows this information about "Ellie" only to him it is E.L.E. (an extinction level event).  That is due to the fact that the comet Wolf-Beiderman is coming on a collision course with Earth.

This comet that is coming on a collision course with the Duvall heads the mission.Earth has to be stopped or else we will all perish.  To do the job President Beck has entrusted Spurgeon Tanner to head up the "Messiah" mission to destroy the comet that was discovered by the young Leo Beidermann (Elijah Wood).  The mission's objective is to reach the comet streaking towards Earth, plant nuclear devices, and destroy the comet before there can be any disastrous results. Will the mission be successful?  Only time will tell, but the entire world is watching Jenny Lerner and her MSNBC newscasts where she was catapulted to the anchor position during these tense moments.  Everyone waits and wonders what the fate of the mission and the world will be.

At first glance Deep Impact is made out to be a effects laden action/thriller that moves at a mile a minute.  Yes there is a number of effects laden monstrous big budget action sequences.  But there is more to Deep Impact than that.  Deep Impact packs a punch, with effects and heart tugging plot lines.  It is not only a disaster movie but it also takes the time to develop Morgan Freeman as the President.the intricate stories that revolve around what people would do if they were faced with the end of the world and impending death.  Jenny needs to reconcile with her mother and father, Leo wants to marry his girlfriend, and many others need to find a way to go on despite the impending doom.

I liked Deep Impact.  Sure, there were a variety of extremely predictable parts of this film.  But I liked the human emotion side of the impending disaster film.  It took us into the lives of some very interesting people and helps us to examine the part of our own psyche and what would we do if we were in the same situation.  Tea Leoni is the reporter.Tea Leoni is a fun actress to watch in this role as she starts as an aggressive underling and progresses to the vulnerable woman that is just as afraid of what lies ahead in her unreconciled personal life as a comet to destroy the earth.

Sure Deep Impact isn't perfect, but as I said earlier it does provoke some thought.  There are those themes that are predictable, but that's okay.  Deep Impact combines the action with the drama, the laughter with the pain, and is a good watch.

Grade:  B-

Parents Guide:  The PG-13 rating that this film carries is mainly for some sci-fi destruction.  There is no real nudity to speak of.  There is some language present as you would expect from a "end of the world" disaster film, but it isn't too overtly bad.  The major reason for the rating is the destruction that lies ahead in the comet's path.
