Snake Eyes Banner

Rating: R

Pull Quote:  "One of the most boring and unrealistic films of the year."

Post Date:  9/15/98

Studio Site:  Knock Off

Stars:   Jean-Claude Van Damme, Rob Schneider, Lela Rochon, Paul Sorvino

Marcus Ray (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is a fashion designer for a high profile jeans company in Singapore with his partner Tommy Hendricks (Rob Schneider).  Tommy doesn't realize however that Marcus is also into knockoffs, goods that are cheap replicas of actual products.  They carry a name brand on their product but are made with a cheaper material, thus making for a bigger profit.  Tommy and Marcus.Obviously the products made are of an inferior quality and cannot hold up in any kind of a comparable way to the real thing.

As Marcus takes place in a race a friend of his is almost kidnapped and the bad guys try to kill him.  Who are these bad guys?  And why are they chasing Marcus' friend?  These and many questions need to be answered in Knock Off.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to summarize this film.  Why?  Well first off I don't like to give away a lot of details on any movie I review.  I try to give you even less than you get on the prerelease trailers.  But the Marcus steadies his aim.second reason is, I just didn't get this film and how to explain it to you.  First any time you have Jean-Claude Van Damme playing a designer you know you're in for trouble.  This film truly did not know where it was going and had no direction whatsoever.

The special effects looked as if they were playing with toys.  I don't expect the quality of effects that is present in Armageddon or a Godzilla, but I do expect something better than a "B" movie.  This is an action film and the action scenes never get very amusing at all.  Rob Schneider is never given a chance to stretch his range with laughter and the film is all about Van Damme.  Even decent Lela Rochon (Karan) takes control.actors like Lela Rochon and Paul Sorvino just seem lost in this film, almost as if they were just there to collect their pay checks.  It's unfortunate, because I have liked some of the Van Damme films in the past simply because they were fun.  This however, was painful to watch and just plain uncomfortable because of how bad it was.

Die hard Van Damme fans will, I think, even be a little disappointed in this effort.  If not for Schneider, this film would get a worse grade than it does.  Stay away from this one unless you are a die hard Van Damme fan and have seen every other film currently in theaters.

Grade:  D-

Parents Guide:  This one got an R mainly for a large amount of violence and language.  I would warn parents slightly though that part of it is not much worse than your basic Terminator-type movies.  However a better reason to dissuade your kids from seeing this is the fact that it is truly a bad movie.
