What's It About?

Dr. Dolittle (Murphy) has a gift.  That gift is that he is able to talk to the animals.  We don't know if it is really a gift or a curse, but he has come to accept it.  His practice is not only with people but with animals as well.  Then one day the Weasel (Andy Dick) pays him a visit and he finds out that he must go out to meet the Godfather of the forest, of course this would be a beaver.

Dr. Dolittle finds out that the only way he can save the animals home from the "evil" timber company is to get a pair of endangered bears to mate.  Which of course won't be easy as one of the bears is a performing bear and the other calls the woods her home.  Can Dr. Dolittle save the forest from a lumber mill?  You'll have to see Dr. Dolittle 2 to figure that one out.

Common Guy's Thoughts

Dr. Dolittle 2 picks up right where the first one left us.  We still have the good Doctor with his sometimes annoying "talent", but now instead of running from the "gift" he is using it for everyone's advantage.  Unfortunately this film just doesn't do it for me.

Eddie goes through the motions of Dr. Dolittle and seems to just move through the script instead of starring in the film.  The real stars of this film are the animals, some real and some done in more y2k terms.  But even that can't carry a film like this.  The fun for me was in catching the variety of guest voices that pop up in the animals that appear in the film.  There is one good thing about this movie, it is very nicely positioned for the whole family.  The film will make you chuckle from time to time, but it does not carry with it that roll on the ground kind of laughter that we have come to expect out of the summer movie season.

I won't tell you not to see Dr. Dolittle, because it is not an awful film by any means.  Just don't see this one expecting to make you laugh endlessly into the night.  It is a good film for the whole family that won't invoke laughs, but will produce chuckles.  Then again that might be just what my wife's dog told me, aaahhh the voices.

Grade

B-

Parents Guide

Rated PG language and crude humor.  This one is PG rated and overall it really is acceptable for the whole family.  Some toilet humor in the film, but truly much less than in the first film.  The whole family should be able to see this without much problem at all.
