What's It About?

Elle Woods (Witherspoon) is about to embark on the greatest day of her life.  Her boyfriend Warner is about to ask her to marry him, or so she thinks.  Warner never pops the question and instead dumps Elle to find a more serious (read intelligent) woman to marry.  As he embarks to Harvard he will leave her behind and find that upscale, serious, stuffy East Coast woman.  But Elle isn't about to just drop this, and is determined to make her way into Harvard Law School herself on her merits.  And when she gets in, the hunt will begin.

Common Guy's Thoughts

Legally Blonde takes us on a journey of one young woman.  The journey to overcome stereotypes and prove to everyone, most importantly herself, that she can do it.  At times this film takes baby steps to get to its conclusion.  I don't think the film knows if it wants to be a comedy or a drama at times.  This is a fun film but it could have been great if it would have stayed straight ahead, in your face comedy.  The blonde stereotype is a monster of a hill to overcome for anyone, especially when you need to overcome it in your own mind, and Reese Witherspoon is the perfect actress to carry out the role.

Witherspoon has become a personal favorite of mine when it comes to the new young actors in Hollywood.  She has gotten the smart comedic roles down well.  (If you don't believe me see Election)  Witherspoon has to sell the audience on the fact that she is learning about herself as much as the people that are around her, and she hits the nail on the head.  She has a nice supporting cast with Luke Wilson, Selma Blair and Matthew Davis among others, but make no mistake this is Witherspoon's film.

This is a fun movie.  No it's not going to blow you away, but you also won't feel disappointed with the way the movie plays out.  It will maybe even play out as inspirational to young teens with its can do attitude.  Reese is fun to watch so sit back, don't object, and enjoy Legally Blonde.

Parents Guide

Rated PG-13 for language and sexual references.  Not bad overall.  Young girls, especially, will be interested in this film.  The language is pretty common for PG-13 films today.  Nothing overtly over the top.  The sexual references fall in line with what you would expect when a woman is leading a film as the butt of a number of blonde jokes.  Overall not bad, and may actually be inspirational for some younger kids.
